King Federer rules

Roger Federer made history by becoming only the second player ever to win five consecutive wimbledon titles(Bjorg was the other).

Though the climax was familiar, the script wasn't.It was easily the toughest Wimbledon match for Federer in the last five years.Nadal played very well, exploiting Federer's backhand again, forcing errors.Federer managed to win the first and third sets in tie-brakers and was really strugling to hold his serves in the fifth.Federer was down 15-40 in the fifth game, but managed to win that game and hold the serve. That was perhaps very critical and it turned out to be one,as Federer broke Nadal in the very next game and broke him yet again in the eight game to win the set at 6-2 and hence the championship.Scorecard read 7-6,4-6,7-6,2-6,6-2.

Federer made it five in a row,but looked beatable in this match,by Nadal who showed vast improvements and adaptability to Grass-court.It would be very interesting to see how Nadal delivers in the Grand slams before the next French.

With both Federer and Nadal looking to out-do the other in each others favorite surfaces, promises a lot more keen tussles between the two.So, Federer is the supreme king of Mens tennis now,but Nadal definitely is a serious contender for his throne.

Raikonnen Makes it two in a row

When the race started today, there were huge expectations from the home fans, to see a Hamilton victory here.Hamilton started the race on pole and was leading the bunch for quite a while, till the first pit stop, after which it was Raikkonnen all the way.Alonso gave a good fight to finish second and hamilton completed the podium, coming in third.

This was Raikkonnens' second consecutive race victory this season and puts him in contention for the tilte along with Alonso and the championship leader,Hamilton.Massa had a very good race and finished the race in fifth position. Thus indicating the Ferrari-Mclaren dominance at the top.Renault had a 7-8 finish and need to work harder atleast to take the third position in the constructors' race.

It was a very good race this weekend and the home fans would have been even more happier, had Hamilton won the race.

Fedex on the verge of history

Roger federer would make history when he (most likely) beats Nadal in the Wimbledon Finals today. This would be a fifth consecutive Wimbledon title for him and there is only one who achieved this before.
Federer looks in prime form and his journey to the Finals has been perfect one. There were very few doubters about the inevitable and he goes into the Finals as the favorite.Federers' form has always been consistent on his favorite surface and no one could stop him so far.

Meanwhile Venus Williams simply steamrolled Bartoli to win the ladies championship at the wimbledon. With Serena winning the australian open and venus here, the williams sissters are certainly back on top and would be serious threats for the contenders at the US open.

Back to the big match today, If Nadal is to beat Federer, then it got to a very very special effort.Nadal must be praying for some magic ahead of the finals. As it stands now, it looks like a very familiar story.

Twenty20 surprise

So, the Indian cricket selectors chose the list of 30 probables and the announcement was made yesterday evening.

They indeed have sprung a surprise by not sticking to the regular ODI players for this format.Though this is more logical,we never expected the board to call cat a cat, looking at their past history.

The big three Sachin,Dravid and Ganguly aren't interested in this format and opted for a break.Infact, these players opting themselves out would have eased the job of the selectors. So,we would have a young team with quite a few rookie players, some of whom, would have never made it to the Indian team for the ODIs or Tests.Thats' a good begining:)

This would also mean a new Captain for the Twenty20 side for the worldcup. With the current indian players without any Twenty20 experience, it would have been ideal to pick players like Dinesh Mongia and murli kathik, who have a quite a good competitive Twenty20 experience from the English counties. As usual with the BCCI, we do not understand the reason for their omission.

It is very difficult to predict how well this team would perform in the championships, but with people like Yuvraj,Dhoni and karthik in the squad,we can hope for some good performances.

The selectors do have their task cut out when they meet again on August 7 to announce the final 15 for the worldcup. We do not have any info about the BCCI plans for the selected 30 in the interim.

We hope they organise a few competitive matches for the selected 30(apart from the ODI regulars, who are on tour),so that they gain atleast a little experience.

Probables for the 20-20 Worldcup

The Indian cricket selectors meet in Mumbai on Saturday to pick 30 probables for the Twenty20 World Cup to be played in South Africa in September.

BCCI has always been reluctant to accept the 20-20 format and hence have done very little so far to promote it in India. The 20-20 world cup was the reason for them to conduct a domestic tournament some time back.

It is very interesting to see how they approach selection for the 20-20 format.Going by their past records, they are likely to pick players from the existing ODI pool. But, there is nothing wrong to hope for a surprise from them.

If they have a good understanding of the game and the requirements for the 20-20 format, they would certainly surprise us;else :)

The other major teams have been playing quite a few 20-20s for the last two years and hence had opportunities to try out newer/specialist players who would suit this format. So, most of them have a data to look back and analyze when they chose their 20-20 world cup teams. But,India have played only a handful of 20-20s and to add did not try anything different. So, we do not know who fits the bill. This makes the task very tough for the selectors in picking the team.

Can we expect surprises?..We would know at the end of the day

Hamilton wave sweeps Silverstone ahead of GP

England, known for hyping its talents, have a new hero in F1, Lewis Hamilton.Ahead of the silverstone GP,with hamilton in a clear lead after 8 rounds, british media goes ga-ga over him,to the extend of calling him 'genius of a lifetime' (Daily Mirror).

Brits always wanted the world to believe that theirs' are the best talents. They promote even average players, calling them the future champions in their respective sports. In reality they had very few sports heroes, who ruled the world. So, when they find a talent like Hamilton,It is all but natural for the Brit media to promote him in a big way.

Hamilton indeed looks to be a rare find and might serve the brit media for quite a long time. For a F1 rookie, leading the championships for well over 8 rounds is not a joke.Accepted, he has a talented team and support staff,he had rigorous preparations, had patience to work with the team for longer hours,etc..But,to enter the tracks with so much confidence and do so well as a rookie is not an easy thing to do.

Hamilton indeed has done wonders so far,not only for him, also for the F1 racing itself. We have the new-gen F1 drivers now, like hamilton and Alonso, who keep the F1 flag flying.

This weekend will see hamiltons first home GP and the brits would like to see him win the race. That would push the Brit media into another level of 'Hamilton mania'

Day of French upsets

Two french stars made headlines today with big upsets.A 22-year French Miss,Marion Bartoli, demolished Henins' hopes of a long-pending wimbledon dream and 21-year old Richard Gasquet stopped Roddick from facing Federer in the semis.

This is Bartolis' bestever Grandslam performance to date. When fans across the world were predicting a Henin-Williams final,Bartoli had other ideas. At one point,it looked to be a familiar script when Henin was leading 6-1 and 4-3.But, Bartoli went into aggressive mode and bundled out henin to pull off the shock result of the tournament.Bartoli won 1-6,7-5,6-1.

In the other semis,Venus sailed through to the Finals brushing aside Ivanovic in straight sets 6-2,6-4.Venus is the favorite for the title and looks like she is all set for the crown.Let us see if Bartoli could repeat her feat for one another time.

Another French star to shine on the day was Richard Gasquet, who upset Roddick in a thrilling five setter,4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 8-6 in a tense and gripping encounter on No.1 Court. As you would read from the scoreline, Gasquet was down two sets and then a couple of costly mistakes from Roddick played to Gasquets' script.Gasquet reaches his first ever Grandslam semis and would face 'king' Federer next.

The prince of clay is also there in the semis and would face Djokovic next. So, an interesting wimbledon weekend ahead.

Moving close to the climax

Ten days into the tournament now.Semifinalists are spotted for the ladies and the last-8 in the mens. There are no surprises so far in the mens section but we have a few in the womens.

How many would have bet on Venus to reach this far and to add she looks like the one to go all the way.Venus always had that inconsistency and injury breaks, more so in recent times, but has come back quite well and taken everyone by surprise here. Her opponents now feel that old Williams intimidation factor.Going by the form,it looks like a henin-venus final, a very interesting one to look forward to.

Intimidation factor in mens tennis;you know who i am talking about. As usual, Federer has moved on.He would face carlos 'mosquito' ferraro in the quarterfinals, most likely to meet Roddick in the semis and may be (!) Nadal in the Finals.

I really pity Roddick. But for Federar and Nadal,he would have won quite a few grandslams already.Nadal stops him in clay and federer elsewhere. It must be really frustrating for him and he can only hope to pass these hurdles sometime in near future. Wish him luck!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

When i write this blog, lucky few from UK would have already watched this fifth potter movie, on its premier. The movie premiers in USA on the 8th of July and hits the theatres across the world from the 11th of July. The movie releases in India on the 19th.
If you are not aware of the plot, here is the synopsis:- Harry comes back on to our screens for his fifth year at Hogwarts School. This time, Lord Voldermot is back after the cliffhanger of him at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire. Everyone is concerned about the Dark Lord's return, but things get worse The Ministry Of Magic hired a mysterious women named Dorles Umbridge who is the new Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts... Harry forms up a group of Hogwarts students and gathered Dumbledore's Army. So Harry taught them about magical spells to defend Lord Voldermout's dark forces... Harry and his army is in the biggest battle yet between Lord Voldermout and his deadly Death-Eathers... Absoutley outstanding special effects, the quality of the acting was 100/100, the script was mind-blowing and the casting was top-notch!!! Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and all of the outstanding cast should deserve an Oscar for all their stupendous work! Seriously I was speechless when I left the theatres! This is the BEST Harry Potter movie yet!

With the previous potter movies spelling magic in the box-office all over the world, there is plenty of expectations from this one and i sincerely hope that it lives up to it.

Visit http://www.harrypotterorderofthephoenix.com/ for the trailor and more.

So, hold on for few more days,we are in for another real fantasy treat!

'Raining' Wimbledon Victors

The player of the tournament so far is Mr.Rain.Whenever i checked for an update this week, there was Mr.Rain getting his name mentioned almost on every day. From the data that i could collect, this might well be one of the worst rain-affected wimbledon tournaments.

Nadal, the Prince of Clay, took five days to complete his third round match.No,no..dont expect an astonishing scorecard..It was a five setter for sure, and was a tougher round for Nadal, but his oppenent was not on the other side of the court. He had to face the most unpredictable and the popular star(Mr.Rain), who was simply unstoppable.

It must be really tiring and frustrating for the players, when u have frequent interruptions in your match and leading to a possibility of playing more than a match on a single day.Our prince of clay had to fight against the rain (8 rain-breaks in this match) for five days to come home victor. He must be hoping that his next round is not so tough!!!.He is one of those 'raining' wimbledon victors for the day.

This gives me some interesting Trivias:-
(1) Which was/were the wimbledon tournament(s) that Mr.Rain failed to attend
(2) Which was the most rain-affected wimbledon tournament?
(3) Which was the most rain-hit wimbledon match..Was that the one we discussed here?

Rain-gear should be a wonderful gift, for the ones coming up with the answers :)

Anyone there to stop this Express?

Roger Federer, the express rolls on in wimbledon and one wonders if there is anyone to stop this express.

Looking back, the first few years of his tennis life wasn't so rosy.He was a very inconsistent player and had attitude problems. But from the time he won his first grandslam here, there is no looking back and tennis world is rejoicing that they get to see the best ever tennis player in action. He truly is a master act and when in full flow, there is no stopping him.

Technically, he is a predominantly forehand player.Though his weakness in backhand is well known, his opponents are unable to exploit that.If you analyze his last two French Open Finals,2006, Federers' forehand was totally out of order and in 2007 Nadal gave him too many backhands,to force errors.Nadal, himself being a fine exponent of tennis is too strong in Clay surface. But, he is way behind Federer in grass and hardcourts, where the ball grips a little and hence doesn't skid much, unlike clay.

As we wonder when he is going to conquer the roland garros clay,he has already reached the quarterfinals in wimbledon, without much of sweat.Do we see anyone stopping him from conquering the London Slam (for record fifth time in a row) this time?we would know soon.

But who dares betting against this master!

Whats cooking with Hamilton?

Hamilton, his rise from a promising rookie to a championship favorite within a very short time, has taken the entire racing world by surprise.Such an astonishing stint of performances in his debut season must be like a dream for him.

Looks like he pinched himself and found out that its not a dream, but real :)

So,
Hamilton likes to use the clause in his McLaren contract that allows for revisiting of his $300,000 per year retainer in the event that he is leading the World Championship by the mid-point of the season.

With his teammate Fernando Alonso enjoying a multi-million dollar deal, it is natural to look for a hike, esp when u r leading the championship.

But isn't this too early to negotiate.

Honor for the carribean king

For the past two decades, there was one king who ruled the hearts of cricket lovers.Style, class, determination and quality are the other names of Brian charles Lara. This carribean King entertained the cricket fans all across the world for so long (17 Years). The king chose the worldcup at home to call it a day and put the fans into a lifetime shock. For many of his Fans, there is no cricket without LARA.

There is an occasion planned for Monday night at London when Brian Lara, the most recent in the long lineage of great West Indian batsmen, is honoured. Lara has a career filled with a phenomenal list of records, unthinkable for his contemporaries.

Sachin Tendulkar, Shane Warne, Courtney Walsh and Michael Vaughan are expected to attend.

India wins a cricket ODI series abroad!

I started my blog today and was wondering what to start with.India won the (cricket) ODI series against southAfrica at Belfast, Northern Ireland. This was India's first one-day series triumph outside the subcontinent since their memorable Natwest Series win in 2002.These sort of things dont happen in indian cricket so often.so, lemme start with this.here we go..

Interestingly, there isn't much hoopla around this news.Pre-worldcup, a similar result would have made the media and the people simply raving about this. But,things are different now.Post-worldcup, I do not see the same kind of intense following to cricket from Indian public. A good majority of the intense followers from my office least cared about this series.I understand that this is just a sample of the situation around the country.

I guess such a break is indeed welcome for both the cricket loving indian public and our cricketers. This should bring them back to level ground and take their tasks more seriously.

When they entertain people with good cricket and in a consistent basis, our people would surely give them the due incentives.
